Lawyer Glides Around Country to Judge Skating - Melissa Dillenbeck

As a senior associate at a law firm I often travel for meetings and to visit clients but what really puts me into road warrior mode is when I travel to judge figure skating tests and competitions.

I've done it for about 10 years now. Skating has long been a part of my life since I started competing at age 6. I did some coaching in college but with the press of law school I had to find a less time intensive way to stay involved.

Now I have two children, a husband and work but I still do my judging.

In January I was in Spokane as a trial judge for the US Nationals, since I am trying to qualify to become a National judge. I've been to Eau Claire and Wausau, Wisconsin via an 8-seater plane, to Colorado, Delaware, Michigan and Connecticut. I don't necessarily fly into big airports and I often have to figure out how to get to the rink on my own. I've learned that east coast cabs have regions, been stuck in a snowstorm in Sault Ste. Marie and had a Zamboni driver come out to the airport to pick me up. (No, not on his Zamboni machine.)

Packing is a different kind of challenge from my usual business travel; in that I always need rink wear. I got some strange looks when I arrived in Detroit in July with a winter coat and sweaters. I don't bring skates because you can't carry them on any more. Usually I need 3 days of heavy sweaters, a down jacket, boots, and a blanket, so often I have to check a bag. For an event like the US Nationals, I also need suits and extra casual wear.

My travel style is comfortable - khakis and a cardigan, and always a scarf. My carry on - Vera Bradley tote with lots of inside pockets. No purse - usually a small bag (like a MicciMicci) inside my tote. I carry reading material, iPhone, my clipboard with my name on it, sunglasses and pictures of my kids

Organizing - a 5x7 planner - I like to see things in writing
Food - Trail mix for emergencies and Potbellies for hot sandwiches.
Airports - Denver for shopping and Midway for food selection.
